Unfortunately largely due to government interference the Police Service is no longer fit for the purpose it was designed in the U.K. Our politicians of all persuasions must take responsibility for this and we certainly need a complete change of direction to redress the balance
One of the most succesful Police Officers in recent years was Ray Mallon who went for zero tolerance, similar to New York, in the USA whose reduction in crime is legendry. Ray Mallon is now Mayor of Middlesborough and he had to endure much unwarranted criticism and was castigated and villified for his views.
However when Ray Mallon became a detective inspector in 1996, he vowed to cut crime by 20% in 18 months.......however he achieved his goal in just 12 months. We should therefore look to Ray for his help in combating crime.
HERE IS RAY MALLONS CHARTER TO RECLAIM OUR STREETS
1) RECLAIM THE STREETSfor law abiding citizens by targeting the yobs responsible for antisocial behavour. Make that the number of priority for police officers elsewhere.
2) FREE CHIEF CONSTABLESfrom the shackles imposed on them by The Home Office and their civil servants so they can lead their force and fight crime in a way that is right for their specific area of the country.
3) SLASH RED TAPE, form filling and bureaucracy that stops rank and file police officers from being out on the streets preventing crime and protecting the public.
4) DITCH THE POLITICAL CORRECTNESSwhich is crippling the ability of police officers to do their jobs. Officers should not need to worry about the colour of the suspect's skin before they decide whether to stop and search them.
5) REMOVE POORLY PERFORMING OFFICERSfrom their jobs, regardless of their rank. Too many in top and middle tiers are complacent, and in policing, complacency costs lives.

His message is that our police force should be crime fighters and not form-fillers as they are at present. Sadly it seems statistics form a very high priority- but not catching the criminal !
